What to do when an elderly 92 years old starts to talk less than she used to?

I hear your concern. I would take her to the doctor to be evaluated. Is she depressed? Not enough food? Or water? Change in medication? Change in her environment? I know its hard sometimes to know what is happening, but I hope you can find an answer.

Enjoy the communications you do have with her.

I agree that the doctor who is following her dementia should be informed.

In my mother's case it was a sign of decline due to progressing vascular dementia. It was also a reason to be thankful as she has borderline personality disorder and narcissism as well and less talk meant less stress. I see your mother has Alz. It may be a sign of her entering another phase and I would check with her doctor.

How long has this change been noticeable? What other changes have you noticed? Changes in sleep? Activities? Eating? Have you observed her not talking with others she is usually chatty with?

That's pretty vague, can she/he not talk or do they just have nothing to talk about?
My mom used to fill me in on all the news from her telephone friends, and I would fill her in on my work week and family doings. Now both of us have nothing to say anymore and mostly sit in silence.
