Sister had mental illness for many years. Should father taking care of her get guardianship?

A friend's sister currently in psychiatric unit. The sister is close to 60 years old and is receiving disability check each month. My friend's father is approaching 80 himself and is worn out. I believe from sound of things, the sister has not been taking her meds and cannot manage herself or health any longer. This is draining her father's funds and wreaking havoc for daily living for both of them. Please advise what type of guardianship or medical power of attorney the father should try to get. Thanks

Miller trust, or Special Needs Trust. See an attorney. Will your friend, her sister be taking charge instead of the father?

Please attend NAMI family to family meetings in your area for more information.

SSDI or SSI

If she is on SSDI of SSI, all that may be needed is a representative payee to handle her money, pay her bills. Anyone can be designated by Social Security Office.

Because of Father's age, someone else as a fiduciary to carry her through the years could be considered.
Unless asked, stay out of it unless you already have an advisory relationship with the family. Continue to be a supportive friend to both parties. imo.

Guardianship is expensive to put in place. Here's a link, https://www.caring.com/questions/how-can-i-get-emergency-guardianship-of-my-adult-child-with-mental-illness
Or advise them to check with NAMI, the National Alliance for Mental Illness.

Well, there is not much to go on here, but my gut reaction is no, that is too old to be taking on the responsibilities.

Why are you asking? Is your friend asking for your advice?

24502, sorry if this seems harsh. If it were me I would not get involved. Maybe your friend, the sister wants guardianship? If not, why not.

I would stay out of this if I were you. Do you even know if father wants guardianship? If not, and I would not blame him because of the history of mental illness. Maybe she is already a ward of the state.
