How do you handle your elderly parent who is an alcoholic?

What does his doctor advise? I've heard that some alcoholics can't quit drinking without supervision. That it ( stopping without aid) can be fatal. We are suppose to realize that alcoholism is a disease and not a moral failing. Most advise that family members seek help through Alanon. Sorry I can't be of more help.
