I'm sorry to hear of your FIL's condition. I'm afraid I don't have much better news than NYDaughterinlaw.

We have a family friend who is 84 years old. He was getting around on his own, lived alone, but was having some dementia. He fell and broke his hip several weeks ago and just can't seem to recover.

They performed his hip surgery with some kind of spinal block to avoid general anesthesia, but he's still really out of it. He hasn't eaten since. His HCPOA had them insert a feeding tube in his stomach. (I thought he had a Living Will, but it wasn't my place to step in.) He's been back and forth between the nursing home and hospital for the last several weeks. He doesn't seem to be aware of anything and it's not drugs. He's also been battling pneumonia. It doesn't look good.

I will say that I'm not sure how much of this is due to dementia, instead of the hip issue. It's difficult to say.

My 94 year old grandfather lived 6 months after breaking his hip. Before breaking it he was a very healthy old man who lived alone and did almost everything for himself. After he broke it, he did have surgery and spiraled downward very rapidly. I hope others have better news to share with you.
