My disabled aunt wants to move to Oklahoma. Any advice?

Oklahoma is not the best place for people with disabilities. I have been here 4 years with my husband who is now total care. It has been a real struggle to keep him at home. Tell your aunt to look into the medical before she moves.

Disabled aunt probably equals Medicaid. Unlike mediCARE, mediCAID does not automatically follow person to a new state. If she made any asset transfers in last five years that result in Medicaid penalty, that could be a problem. Aunt or her POA will have to get her qualified in Oklahoma for services. If she is impoverished and you are seeking support services like meals on wheels etc, you will need a lot of info on assets and income. I agree with CM, whose idea is it? And what are expectations of your involvement when aunt gets to OK?

Hi Mimi, Yes, please provide more information. How old is your Aunt, what is her disability, how much assistance does she need, and what is her income source? Why does she want to move? Do the Georgia relatives think this is a good Idea? Is she their mother? What has her POA and is authorized to make medical decisions. Ideally such power is help by someone who can quickly be at her side. If the Georgia cousins have that authority it needs to be transferred to you. Would she be living with you or are you looking for a place for her? At a minimum you need to know what her full medical situation is and whether that can be accommodated in OK. If there is an Area Agency on Aging where you live, call or go visit them.
