How do you start a conversation about assisted living?

Sure the best time to initiate a conversation about assisted living is well before the need arises. But for most of us thats much easier said than done. Any advice on how to make the talk a little easier?

They are good answers! I wish I asked, before I got into that situation....

The need to approach this subject with sensitivity and tact should go without saying. One would hope that some 'hints' over time may have been indicated by the person re longterm /future care when the need arises. Perhaps an approach could be 'what if' or 'what should happen when'. All the who, what, when, where and how questions.

I would ask what he/she wants done if the time comes that they cannot take care of themselves. Word of advice get a POA now, do not wait. No one has any sort of POA with my parent and now she is not of sound mind to do one. It has left me in a tight spot.
