How does an elder regain guardianship of herself if state took over?

she was under influence of medication in hospital and now she speaks and think as well as before she went into hospital.she has no living family, just a friend/ caregiver whose helped assist her for the past 6 years

The court appoints a lawyer to defend her, a court evaluator examines her and her MD's provide a patient history. The Social Worker would be deposed as well. So she would have to repeat the whole process and pass with flying colors. I have never seen a patient, especially an elder, suddenly recover all their abilities. It would be a first.

What actually happened here? Who did the court appoint as guardian, as conservator?
