My Mom lives in a nursing home in another state and I want her in one near me but she gets her state's form of Medicaid. Suggestions?

I think she is over income in my state to receive Medicaid here ( Massachusetts). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Contact your local area agency on aging, ask to speak with the long term care ombudsman who will be able to give you information on income limitations for long term care Medicaid in your state. Then ombudsman can also give you info on how to transfer her to a facility closer to you if this is what she wants.

I had my brother moved from North Carolina to Arkansas from one nursing home to another. We did not transfer Medicaid but the nursing home he was transferred to was ready to prepare the papers for his application for medicaid in Arkansas. If he owned a home in another state they told us he would not have been eligible but he did not own any real estate. You need to have a nursing home ready to accept her before the nursing home in the other state will release her. We had a professional patient transport company move her. He was in a bed as they drove him all night while he slept from North Carolina to Arkansas, everything went well . It cost us $2900.00. And it was worth every penny. It was a lot of phone conversations and filling out papers but it can be done .

Mom will have to be a resident in the state she is moving to prior to moving into a
facility for Medicaid to pay. You would have to apply and make sure there is a place for her at the facility you are interested in. Check with your local Medicaid office to see if there are any residency restrictions. Income and asset eligibility should be about the same since Mediciad rules are se tby the Feds, but it would be smart to check it out .
Good Luck

Call an Elder Law Attorney in that state for a free phone consultation to get the facts. You need to go by the law in that state.

Getting Medicaid to transfer to another state is a tricky one. Before you think about this too long, make sure it is possible. A move would be very hard on her as well. Have you discussed moving her with Mom's doctors or other family?
