Private Asked April 2015

Is adult daycare available for disabled adult children with a psychiatric diagnosis and addictive behaviors?

38 YO Female bipolar lesbian with a prescription drug, caffeine, tobacco and alcohol addiction on disability. She can not be trusted to be alone or alone with purses. Has issues with continence, impulse and ambulation. Would care be covered through disability or would it be private pay. If private pay, what are the rates?

Actually go to a local Nami / National Association for Mental Illness class. You will get information, find out what other parents have tried, you will get support, and you will find out what has not worked. Do not buy her a car.

Again, her doctor would have to order the adult daycare, psychiatric. There maybe a waiting list in your area.

If she is on disabilty in CA, she has medicare and mediCal= Medicaid. Ask her psychiatrist what to do. A nursing home or in home service provider should be covered by insurance. The doctor can order this. Once care is received, she can transition back into the community. As for her family, you have no money for her care, or else she cannot qualify. It is very hard to get help beyond teens and young adults. She needs an advocate to fight for her.

Tough love says jail, then rehab. If you can "afford" rehab, after rehab, after rehab, then try that before jail. Each person is different, deserves a chance.
A psychiatric board and care can help with ambulation/incontinence.
Sounds very ill, needs supervision. Have you tried a group home?

I think a a caretaker might be better then a daycare group it would be some one she could bond with when you are not home really if I where to guess you are dealing with which drawal and yes the meds do help but the person has to want to stop they can be on deaths door and still want a fix and yes they don't care how they get it go into other people's stuff they need special help more then medical care they need to reset there mind and lives not found in daycare is it covered yes I think so Even your local pastor can help you the above groups are wonderful more then good luck to both of you happy recovery and we'll com to a new life

NAMI may have info, ask about a psychiatric rehab program which would have clients her age. The adult medical day program here (closed now) would take younger clients. I would think that would vary from program to program. Good luck.

I think your resources will vary by state. My brother has similar issues but has really lucked out with a nonprofit organization (jawonio/) in upstate NY that takes care of all his needs...they set him up in an apartment, provide career and health counseling, make sure he takes his meds, etc.

The other thing that's been really helpful for my brother was getting involved in AA and NA many years ago. They helped him beat all his addictions and provided structure, community, and self-respect that have been huge in turning his life in a positive direction.

I would contact your local NAMI (NAMI.org) chapter to see what resources are available in your area. Sometimes there are counseling/day habilitation programs available that Medicaid will pay for.
