How are joint assets and current income divided between spouse and person needing NH care?

My 77 year old wife has Alzheimers and is approaching the need for NH care.. We jointly own a home, cars, and have saving invested in stocks. Are the total assets, jointly owned, considered in determining her medicaid qualification, or are these assets split according to some formula to make that determination? Our income is SS and investment dividends.

Yes jointly owned assets get divided up. If you can get her in as private pay, you have a much better choice of facilities. Ask to speak with the NH benefits consultant. Any NH is obligated to help sort the financials.
