Where can I bring my Mom for activities and get her out of the house a few days a week?

And what this would cost.? She has dementia and is getting worse everyday and she gets herself all upset and causes arguments at my sisters house. She loves to be around people and talk to them she s very pleasant and also likes to help out. I would like to find her a place that she could go a couple of days a week and it gets her out of the house and also gets her excited about doing something. Please let me know of all the programs like this and cost. Thank You.

Adult Daycare Centers are popping up everywhere these days. I live in Benbrook, and have discovered a lovely place called The Rose Cottage. It is located on Harris Parkway near the hospital district. The staff is very caring and you don't need to be a member. They charge $10/hr and you can drop your parent off at any time or day. Give them a call for more info or perhaps names of other places convenient to you. My mom goes there 1-2x a week for a couple of hours, which gives me some alone time to do nothing or get some errands done. Hope this helps

I also know of senior centers run by the city that provide meals for very little. The socialization there is great and people tend to eat better with their peers. They also have groups like quilting, knitting, etc., where your mom could just sit and visit. If you can go with her the first few times to get her acquainted. If she cannot go alone, you may have to hire a person to stay with her for a couple of hours. There are people, even seniors there, who can help watch her. I hired a widow from our local center to pick up and supervise my mother-in-law three days a week. It cost me $10 and hour plus extra for gasoline. The woman who I hired was thrilled to have a little extra spending money. The best to you.

Initially hubby hated his two days at the adult day stay. I ended up telling him he was going to work, the center went along with this and greeted him with his job for the day. (usually taking a wheelchair pt for a ride around the hallways). He loves his visits now.

I am doing what terryjack mentioned with VA . Wi am awaiting an appointment. By being his daughter and sole care provider i have neglected my own health needs terribly and missed manyappointments for myself .he is lonely and still will not consider himself to be a Senior..he's 85...the state provided senior centers offer meals and football dinners aswell as transport bit his interests are more automotive so i sought an alternative. You may have to manipulate your loved one in a kind way to get them there. Tell them that they can Volunteer to help seniors may help

My Dad is starting an adult day program 2 days a week tomorrow. He is a vet who served during war time (though not in the war himself) so qualifies for VA benefits which will cover this. If you dad(or mom) was a war time vet you can look into coverage of these services through the VA. The VA seems to be improving their caregiver services, including support and education of caregivers.

I looked at your profile to see where you live-- I would suggest you call the West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging for information on local services and supports for you and your mom. They have an Elder Helpline you can call, 1-800-96-ELDER. They might be able to tell you if there are any Adult Day Care or Adult Day Health programs in your area, which I would highly recommend. Prices really vary by region. In my rural county in Western Washington, we have one adult day program which charges $12.50 per hour. We also have a Family Caregiver Support Program which has some state funding to help family caregivers pay for adult day care at this local program, so our program can usually pay for some hours or supplement hours, so the caregivers only pay a percentage of the hourly rate on a sliding fee scale.

Adult medical day care is a great way to get mom out of the house and into the hands of professionals, it will give her time to socialize and she will keep busy. It's been my experience it's a great place. Fee usually depends on income, if she has Medicaid or veterans benefits it may be paid in full. You can contact your local Area Agency on Aging or Bureau of Senior Services for info if you are unable to locate a day care. You can also contact your local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, they offer some assistance and information.

We put my mil in Adult Daycare. She loves it. She loves having friends. She does crafts and plays games too. She qualifies for reduced rate, so it costs about what we would pay to feed her lunch daily. They have great lunches with large portions. Her doctor says the routine is great for her...and us. Keeps her busy and gives us time to do our own thing.

Search on Google for “Alzheimer's Day Care at Night” blog

the “Alzheimer's Cafe‘s” blog.

The concept is to provide a social occasion, a meetup, for anyone with dementia / Alzheimer's, their care givers and family. They are informal and generally free. Activities vary.

Any way you can spread the idea of Evening-Daycare or Alzheimer's Cafe programs to more communities will help.
