Mom accuses my Dad of cheating and poisoning her. How do I get her on meds?

My Mom denies she needs medical help. She is paranoid. Her Dr. suspects Dementia. She doesn't believe anything is wrong with her. She is mean to my dad. She has called police 2 times. She hit him & injured her hand, but blames him. She says her house is bugged & the farm renters are trying to steal their land. She is verbally abusive to dad daily. How do I convince her to get help? The health professionals say she has to consent to treatment & she won't.

"Mom, we need to get the doctor to give you antidote right away and document what's going on"

You cannot force someone to set up a POA. The best action would be to have her taken to the ER for a psychiatric evaluation. And she may have a variety of dementia that can be stopped. So it is very important to have a neurologist check her out. Early last year L had a series of mini strokes, TIA's, thatbeffected his memory. Took hime for a CT scan of his head. Doc started him on an extended release aspirin to stop the mini strokes that were effecting his memory. The memory problems were not cured, the damage had been done, but his memory is not getting worse. A thorough workup by a neurologist is extremely important!

She has been checked for UTI. She has called 911 on him twice! She says he beats her up. The police, health professionals,EMT's all think she's got dementia but she refuses to hear it. I guess POA is the only way. Anyone else force their parent to do this? Police say it is a hard row to hoe. I am reluctant.

Oh my, Theresa. She could have something as simple as a UTI or as complicated and heartbreaking as dementia. I don't supose any of you has POA or anything? If she is assaulting your father, either you or he should call 911; the police will take her to the ER most likely. However, you may have to wait until she falls and needs EMS to transport her to ER.

Can your dad convince her to go with him to a doctor FOR HIM??? Can someone convince her that due to Obamacare regs, or something, she needs a new physical? Poor dad; if you were to take Dad away to your house, would that increase her sense that she needs some help?
