My Dad (82) is going to have a hip replacement. What should I know and expect for his recovery?

BarbBrooklyn Oct 2014
Make sure he is seen by a cardiologist before the surgery. Elderly folks sometimes make it through the surgery and die of a heart attack soon after. Has he gotten a second opinion on this?

Does your father have dementia? If he does, you can expect the dementia to be worse after the surgery. Sometimes elderly people bounce back from anesthesia, sometimes they don't.

If he doesn't have dementia he may experience some confusion and agitation after the surgery. This too is from the anesthesia. Anesthesia is like poison to elderly people.

Without knowing anything else about your dad it's difficult to speculate about what to expect.
