I'm doing Dad's laundry and I'm having difficulty removing the urine odor. Any advice?

My Dad was admitted to a nursing home a week ago. After numerous stories about lost laundry my mother and I have opted to do my Dad's laundry. Today I found a pair of trousers in a plastic bag, the top was tied in a knot. I put it in my tool box in the back of my truck and came home. When I opened the tool box the odor had permeated the bag and my tool box smelled awful. The odor followed me through the house and into the laundry room. The odor refuses to come out of the fabric. I fear this is going to be an on going problem. I am an RN and I thought I had smelled it all. I guess not. Can you help me?

A cup of vinegar in the wash (full load) will get out the smell.

I have same issue. This works pretty well. White distilled vinegar. Soak everything! Sheets, clothes and anything else. Also spray down mattress and let dry. Surprised myself how well this works.

Iodine neutralizes the ammonia so does chlorine bleach. I would use iodine scrub on dark laundry, and bleach on the whites. In the toolbox itself , just air it out in the sun. Spray some clean rags with Febreze and put them in there.
