How do I know if my parents can get meals on wheels and how does it work?

My parents are 82 yrs old and 89 yrs old. Mother has alzheimers and a hearing impairment, dad has ambulation problems, hearing problems and bladder cancer. Neither can really cook anymore and I was wondering are they eligible for meals on wheels in Rockland County New York?

There are certain criteria, including lack of transport, some homebound conditions, etc. Given your parents' conditions, it sounds like they would be candidates.

Best thing to do is Google Meals on Wheels, Rockland County, NY and determine whether the Area Agency on Aging or some other entity provides MOW for your particular community.

In our area, AAA provides meals for some communities, but in my father's community the Senior Center is responsible for administration of the MOW program.

I called on a Thursday; delivery of his meals began the following Tuesday. I'm told, however, that in Detroit there's a long waiting list. So the community and number of applicants apparently are determinative factors of how soon MOW can start.

I called the Senior Center, expressed his interest and answered a few short questions relating to his mobility, age, limitations, etc. I don't recall if monthly income was asked or not.

His MOW are delivered between 10:30 and 12:30 M - F. He must be there to accept them. If he does have a doctor's or other appointment, notice is required to the Senior Center the day before so no meal would be delivered on the day of the outing.

Frozen meals can be requested for the weekend, if desired, but must be microwaved by the recipient.

Payment in our area of Michigan is $3 per meal, paid by the recipient, with the balance subsidized by AAA. Payment can be made weekly or biweekly, by check or in cash. Meal deliverers will bring payment envelopes.

Once MOW is ordered, the recipient must accept the meals daily - he/she can't just take the meals which he/she likes.

Hope this helps.
