What will happen to broke parent if they cannot live independently?

My mother-in-law recently passed away and father-in-law lives in an apartment alone. Father-in-law and all of his children live in Florida within two hours. He ha no savings, no long term care insurance, no assets, no life insurance. I'm concerned what will happen if he can no longer live alone? Can the state make the children take care of him? My husband and I are the only ones of the whole bunch who even own a home - I am afraid we would be "nominated" to take him in, even though our home is not very big and we both work tons of hours. I've seen too many instances where things have gone really bad upon taking in a parent. I will do anything not to go that route....I'm afraid I'll get stuck!

Thank you for the response. My in laws are a great family. It's just that no one ever plans farther out than a week or two...not the way I was raised! When I married into the family 20 years ago, I never could project that those problems would become my problems, I was young and taught to be very self sufficient. I didn't realize how truly poorly planned their lives were until later.

With no assets, he will likely end up in a Medicaid NH when he is eligible. Tough situation. Sounds like generational poverty, if only one of his kids was able to achieve higher and none are in a situation to want or be able to help him. Unless, your husband is strongly advocating for him, you bear no responsibility. No denying it is a sad situation, but one which has roots FIL helped to plant.

Sounds like he has a bunch of kids, if you do get pulled into this, insist everyone contributes something - money or time.
