What is the purpose of the Assessment of Daily Living Skills?

This test is being administered to mother. What will the results tell us about her advancing dementia?

EXPERT Carol Bradley Bursack, CDSGF Jul 2013
Carol's answer is terrific. I just wanted to add that Medicare and LTC insurance also use those tests to see if people qualify for certain services. It's kind of an all purpose tool used throughout the industry to assess the needs of the individual.
Take care,
Carol

Assessment results will indicate what level of care your mother needs and the kind of assistance that will best help her. Before my Dad moved to a skilled nursing home, the Director from an assisted living visited and asked questions about his ability to care for basic needs. Based on the answers, the Director was able to determine Dad would not be a suitable candidate for their facility. He needed assistance with many daily activities.

For instance, Dad's limitations included not being able to use the toilet or bathing by himself. He is in a wheelchair, needs help getting in and out of bed and requires a caregiver to help him get dressed in the morning. He is forgetful so there's no way we could rely on him to take his medication at the right time. I imagine others will elaborate based on their own experiences so you'll have a better idea about what's going on.
