My mom thinks people steal from her and she swears my 86 year old father is having an affair! Could it be Alzheimer's?

When she misses something she swears someone stole it, She says my fathers girlfriend drives in front of the house all the time, or that she leaves notes at her door or sends text on her phone. My father is 86 and uses a walker! She always thinks someone is up to something and it seams its always out to do something wrong to her. Are theses signs of dementia/Alzheimers or something else?

EXPERT Carol Bradley Bursack, CDSGF May 2013
Absolutely. She needs to get to a doctor. There are some medications that can mimic dementia, but either way, she needs a diagnosis. The behavior you mention is very common in Alzheimer's. Good luck,
Carol

Paranoia can be associated with several disorders, or even be a result of a uti. Those particular accusations -- stealing and an affair -- are heard often in people with dementia. In any case, they definitely indicate something is wrong.

Please take Carol's advice and get Mom to a doctor.
