How do I move my bedridden Mom 800 miles to a nursing home near me?

After her stroke in August she is paralyzed on her left side and scrambled in her brain. She is in LTC at a nursing home and I fly back to see her twice a month. Is it even possible to move her to a NH near me where I can see her every day?

When you find a nursing home, ask them about transport options. They have people that they use for transportation to doctors visits. But you have to ask. My inital quote for a transport via medical transport on a bed for 220 miles was $5,000. So I went to the NH admissions and told them you must have someone that transports. I am sure, I am not the only one with this problem. They gave me 2 names. Got it done for 1,200. If not, ask the social worker there. Do you have a friend with a van?

I think renting a motorhome might be a better option don't you think?

Well, actually cost is a real issue. I was thinking of renting a van and moving her cross-country myself. It's a 16 hour drive but with the right equipment and a strong helper I might be able to do it.

It is far better to have your mother near you where you can meet her needs and be less traumatic for you and less costly than flying back and forth. Blessings to a loving daughter!

Talk with her doctor and/or the LTC about making arrangements for the move after you find an availabile NH nearby. I would think travel by ambulance would be the easiest. If cost is not an issue there are companies that provide medivac services. That would certainly be the quickest and least tramatic for your Mom.

Good luck.
