Any surgery is risky for an elder. Anesthetics can be the last straw for some and push them over the edge into dementia. Just surviving surgery can be an issue. That said, only a doctor can determine how necessary this is. If you don't totally trust that doctor, then you may want to get a second opinion. Carol
Riz: I would also recommend finding a doctor who specializes in medicine for the elderly (geriatric medicine) and, as MOE mentioned, get a second opinion.
My Mom's doc is very cautious about any invasive or extreme procedures (she is 83). At this age most doctors are concerned with "quality of life" as opposed to length.
