I'm new to caregiving and lost. Any suggestions?

My mom, 86, has on a downward spiral for the last 5 years, first diagnosed with Parkinson's and just days ago recently Alzheimer's. I was forced into being her caregiver after my sister decided she did not want to anymore and I'm a bit overwhelmed. Any suggestions would be so helpful. In only a month's time, she has started this new habit where she will take her pill and chase it with some water but then retains the water in her mouth and refuses to swallow. When we tell her to spit it out, after 10 mins or more, we just noticed that the pill is spit out too. We've tried the 'calm atmosphere' approach and even coaxing her but no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for reading my long message.

Dear newatthis17,

I know you are doing the best you can. Sorry your sister isn't helpful. I would check with the doctor but maybe you can crush her pills and put them into applesauce or yoghurt. I'm not sure what size are her pills and the number of pills but hopefully this is an option.

I'm not sure if you want to consider a nursing home or assisted living for your mom. Or if its possible to get home care to help you.
