Husband has had Dementia for 5 years. He wears depends+ at night and has recently started to remove the padding and tear them off. Advice?

You may have to double up on the underwear and add a chuck or 2. Chucks are bed padding for pee accidents.

Dress him in an anti-strip jumpsuit when he goes to bed. Put a Depends on him with an extra pad in there to absorb more liquid, too. It's not necessarily that he's 'uncomfortable' wearing the brief; it's just something people with dementia & Alzheimer's seem to be obsessed with doing; removing their briefs and making a mess at night. Which is why the onesie's were invented. Here's a link:

If you want to wake him up to use the bathroom at night, once should be sufficient; that's all the caregivers do in Memory Care where my mother lives. They wake her up at 4-5 am to see if her brief is wet or if she needs to use the toilet.

My first thought is that you might need to get him up several times over night to have him go pee in the toilet. That should prevent his waterproof pads getting soaked to the point of urine running off them. And if you don't want him to get out of bed, you can keep a urinal next to the bed, and either you or him can hold it while he's in bed. If he is only wearing Depends at night, then I too think that he probably doesn't like the feeling of wet being against his skin, so getting him up more might just solve that issue. Good luck.
