Alzheimer's Disease is the most common type of dementia and has been studied the longest. There are descriptions of how the disease typically progresses, as freqflyer mentions. Keep in mind that an individual case may vary from the "typical" progression, but that it can be useful to know the patterns.

Other kinds of dementia (Vascular, Lewy Body, etc) do not follow the same progression as Alzheimer's.
