Some late-stage symptoms but functioning okay. What could be going on?

We believe my mom is in early/mid stage of dementia/ALZ. She is still living alone, can easily perform all of her ADLs, and most of her IADLs (we handle finances and transportation). But lately she has been occasionally experiencing some troubling symptoms that I always thought came much later. For example, she says she sometimes forgets how my brother is related to her. And has one time asked to be taken home when she already was home.
Does this make sense? What could be going on?

It also could be a UTI, stroke, vitamin deficiency etc. even if her dementia is not progressing rapidly. Forgetting your kid means you are not able to be left alone and she should never be left alone again. It's time for someone to live with her 24/7 or to place her in a facility where she will be cared for.

Dementia can and does progress at different speeds and in different ways in different people. I won't say that you shouldn't pay any attention to information about the "stages"; I will say that it is much more useful to focus on the symptoms and behaviors your mom is experiencing and exhibiting than on guidelines that are based on observations and studies of millions of people with dementia.

What's going on is that moms AD is further along than you realize. She needs to stop living alone now and have help 24/7 in home or be placed in managed care.
