If the President sends people a $2000 stimulus check, how will that be viewed by Medicaid? It would put my mom over the asset/income limit.

You don’t have to worry about this because it’s never going to happen.

This is the correct answer. It won't happen.

Yippee! Are we supposed to be getting a stimulus payment?!

I don't think we can speculate at this point, 1) whether that will happen, and 2) how that could affect medicaid or any other benefits tied to income eligibility.

I would rest assured, that if your mother receives any unexpected income which puts her over the asset limit for her Medicaid eligibility, that extra money will quickly be spent down and she will again meet the eligibility requirements. It depends on your state and county. When we lived in Minnesota, the county social worker determined how much of my husband's income (SS disability) would apply Monthly to his spend down amount. It was subject to change, as she calculated changes in received income and expenses. So, for instance, we owed anywhere from $800 to $1400 a month, which was taken as a deduction from benefits paid.

The last time there was a stimulus check, those in NHs had a year to spend it down before it was considered an asset. It could be gifted if I remember correctly. Its suppose to be spent to help the economy.

When this happened during covid, it was a tax credit and therefore not income or wages when it went to individuals.

My MIL was on Medicaid and got 2 of those checks during covid and it didn't affect it at all.

If it happens again, it will probably be the same.

Thank you for this information, Geaton777. It's a better answer than mine.

If your mom goes over income in a month because of receiving a stimulus check or for some other reason, the excess income likely can be spent on eligible medical expenses or be used for her patient-liability share for the month.
