Ritalin or Adderall for depression?

JoAnn29 Nov 16, 2025
These are both ADHD meds. Should not be taken by anyone that does not have ADHD. As said, they are stimulants but for someone who suffers from ADHD, they work opposite. After years of taking epilepsy meds, my grandson tried going back on his ADHD meds and suffered depression and had suicidal tendencies so he had to stop them.

See your doctor with these questions and to address depression.

Not enough information.

Those are both stimulants. I don't know any senior who is taking those for depression. They come with very undesirable side effects, like agitation, anxiety, appetite suppression, somberness. It didn't help my son back in the 90s when it was treating his ADD.

My Mom is on Lexapro for depression. It's been working really well for her with no side effects (but this can differ by person).
