My 89-year-old mum had a UTI 12 days ago! It has been treated, but she has suddenly become confused. Is this common?

This especially happens at night, with ehr thinking it’s morning.

Ask if a culture was done. A culture tells them what bacteria is causing the UTI. Then the appropriate antibiotic is given. Should be given by IV a couple of days. Otherwise, itsca broad spectrum antibiotic which may not fully clear up the UTI.

My Mom was on cranberry tablets and a probiotic daily to help prevent a UTI. She only lived a little over a year after her last UTI and never had another one. Alva swears by D-Mannose.

AlvaDeer is the one who mentioned a supplement, d-Mannose, as a preventative for UTIs. That was back in 2019 when my MIL (in LTC) was getting them almost every other month. Once she was clear of any UTI I provided the supplements to the staff and she was given it daily. It reduced her UTIs dramatically, maybe only once or twice a year. I bought it on amazon.com. She still needed to drink enough water as well. d-Mannose is simple sugar and there are no known drug interactions with this supplement. They think it works to help the bladder empty more fully. However, if your LO is diabetic I would run it past the doctor first as a precaution.

I think I read it keeps the bacteria from clinging to the sides of the bladder. Drinking lots of water, flushes it and making sure you void completely is a big thing.

She could possibly be sun downing can be a bit confusing at night time . Try using large clocks with time and day so she could see . Also many residents in assisted living kept getting uti overnight but recently everyone has been using a pure wick and it seems to help keep the uti down . Have her Drink lots of cranberry juice also

Time to do a recheck on urine. So common are UTIs in the elderly that my doc says they don't worry until it is more than three in a year. They don't even bother to treat if asymptomatic.

If the next Urine/C&S is negative, then it is to discuss with medical what next steps are for you.
