Are there government programs to help pay for upgrading my home to be handicap accessible?

After my wife was diagnosed with Dementia I heard of the concept of renovating your home with an 'Age-in-Place' in order to avoid (or at least delay) the Nursing Home scene and the enormous cost that comes with it. We had property we sold to pay for it, but if we hadn't had the money, I would have taken out a Home Equity Loan, in realizing that I am better off paying it off by delaying a +$10,000. monthly expense (which is what it costs in Upstate New York). Plus, I have increased the value of our home versus paying rent at a Nursing Home.
If interested, 'Office for the Aging' had no help money wise, but they did help me by providing ADA input.

My friend was wheelchair bound and the Dept of Disabilities helped him with a ramp.

If you need assistance with anything like that, call the Office of the Aging in your area. They were very helpful with information for my mother.
