I researched further and found thatbif children or elderlynlive in the home the "winter protection" can be extended.
I was on a committee where a man left a million dollars to the Township to help those in need. The million was invested by a bank he put in charge. The interest made was what was used to help people and our Church was asked to interview people asking for help and send a voucher to the bank. We had a man move into a low income apt complex from another county to our Township. He owed 1500 to the Electric company. He gave permission for our chairman to contact the electric company. First thing she asked is how was he able to get electric in the new apartment if he owed so much. She was told because he was getting assistance with his apt rent and other things they could not shut him off. No, we did not pay his back charges because they were accumulated in another county where he was a resident. And, electric company was not going to shut him off for non-payment. Also, we directly paid the electric company not hand the money to the person. I think he may have thought he would getbthe money in hand.
Usually You Can apply for fuel assistance . If your income is limited and especially if you have elders in the home . Where I Iive we have till April 30 before anything is shut off . Today is only 23 degrees. Call Your senior center for advice and they can connect you to the right program .
If you live in a place that has cold weather, there may be a winter disconnect program, where gas and/or electric can't be cut off during the winter months. I believe March is the last month the program would be in effect.
You have some good answers. Hopefully you ger help. I don't think your Gas can be shut off because it is Winter.
Utilities usually have help but you need to apply for that before the season approaches. So call your utility companies and ask how you can get help for next year too. Not sure if United Way can help you or not.
If you live in a very frigid weather state there are often some rules about turning off anything affecting heating. I would call your local council on aging.
What communication have you had with your Energy provider to try to work out some sort of payment plan? I am sorry you are going through this.
Call 211 to see what resources are available in your city, as I know there are many charities that will help with that. I live in NC and am getting ready to go volunteer at one of those charities this morning. I wish you well in getting the help you need.
