Sleeping long hours. What could the reason be?

Is very common to elders. The meme is "Eat less, sleep more".

If you are referring to a person that is ill, (dementia or other illness) it can mean many things.
If you are talking about someone that has been reasonably healthy it can mean other things.
Sleeping a lot, increased sleeping can be an indicator of decline. My Husband with dementia went from sleeping a "normal" 8 to 10 hours to sleeping 10 to 12 then as he declined he slept more the last year of his life he was sleeping about 18 to 20 hours and the last few months he was sleeping 23, 24 hours barely waking to eat or during a change of briefs or clothes. (he would often sleep through his bed bath.)
If the person has been healthy with no other problems it can mean an illness, depression and it should be followed up.
