How does a family member find a home health aide to check on a parent?
My mom's short-term memory has progressed . She needs someone to go in maybe make a meal for her ensure she is taking her medicine and some cleaning. Where would I start to look?
Care.com is a place to start. Also call agencies providing senior help and care in your area. You might also ask on your NextDoor app if there are folks available.
I think a problem that you will run into is that this help is quite costly and that people require "minimums". For instance, Visiting Angels, when I checked years ago for my brother had a minimum of four hour a day three days a week. With the fees running then about 30.00 an hour. People are unwilling to travel to do only a few hours of care; it disrupts their work schedule needs and is costly for them in terms of transit.
Wishing you best of luck but I think that you may be needing placement soon, and that from a standpoint of the safety of your elder.
Now is the time to consider her future. She is going to continue to decline. Those that suffer with Dementia should not be alone 24/7, IMO. Its too unpredictable. If you don't want to be her caregiver, thats OK, but maybe now is the time to look into a nice AL if she can afford it.
Care.com for independent private-hire caregivers/companion aids. or Contact social services for her county for an in-home assessment. Depending on the state/county they can provide some services like light housekeeping, meal prep and hygiene assistance. Meals on Wheels Browser search for "caregiving agencies near me". Contact her local Area Agency on Aging for more possible resources.
