Illinois - Medicaid. Should I apply now or wait until or if needed?

My almost 90 year old mother is okay for now. She lives with me and things seem to be stable for the most part. I have a caregiver come a few times a week. I guess my question is should I start the medicaid process or wait until it is needed? Maybe I'll be lucky and it won't ever be needed. I'm thinking if I need her on medicaid I would have home care. I'd like to keep her here as much as possible.

I don't think you can apply for Medicaid in advance. My State gives you 90 days to apply, get them info needed, spenddown and find a place. I don't think after 90 days you can wait until Mom needs more care. Call Social Services and ask a caseworker how this is done in your State.

My gut reaction is to apply as soon as you can. The process may take a while and if she qualifies you are a step ahead, if she does not qualify you will know why and if it is a financial reason you can begin to spend down what needs to be spent so that when she actually does need Medicaid she will qualify.

shanechicago, when it comes to Medicaid, each State has their own rules and programs. Some States have limited home care, so check with your State to see how many hours are given for home care. Would 3-4 hours a day be enough? Best to plan ahead.

Wait until Medicaid is needed, as that day may never come.
