Can’t find the original “Last Will and Testament” that was done in 2006. I have a copy of it. Are they recorded somewhere in the court house?

Does your copy not show the lawyer who wrote it? If so call him. Have you asked probate if a copy can be filed or does it have to be the original.

Older people did like lock boxes. My Mom kept all her important papers in a drawer in her dresser. Maybe they are in a shoebox on a shelf of a closet. Maybe a lockbox on a shelf.

We have a copy of our will and our attorney has another. I don't think it needs to be 'recorded' as it isn't in effect.

This post reminds me that I need to put our important papers in a fireproof lockbox of some kind! I am actually looking at them right now--just sitting there.

we need to update the will and DH has not wanted to do it until after his mom dies, b/c some things will change. I keep it updated 'holistically', but need to have it done by the lawyer and notarized.

In our state wills aren't filed with the court when they are created, just when probated after death. In lot of instances if the will is done by a lawyer they keep the original and you'd get it from them if needed. Is it in a folder from a lawyer (ours is, with a cover letter). If not, check to see who the witnesses were because if the will was done by a lawyer the witnesses and notary are usually from their office. Does the person have a safety deposit box? Can you get access to it?
