How to get 81 yr. old husband to doctor?

Icare2023 Jun 6, 2023
There are Drs that do home visits. Here, there is ER2YOU that can bring emergency room care to your home. Ask your primary Dr or call a home health care office. They should be able to tell you.

Worry about yourself and your possible lung cancer now, instead of getting an alcoholic husband to the doctor! If he wants help, he can ask you for it and for rehab to get sober. In the meantime, you have to care for YOURSELF.

You can read about Martha's situation on her profile page.

Wishing you the best of luck with all of this.

Ever since Covid, most doctors offices are still doing online visits via Zoom. Does his have that option?
Also since your husband is on Medicare they DO require an annual physical in person and someone actually comes out to your house as well to ask you questions about your health. Has that been done yet this year or at least set up?
I know in your profile you state that your husband is an alcoholic. Is that why he's not wanting to go to the doctor for fear of what they might say to him?
Without having the reason he's not wanting to go to the doctor, all any of us on here can do is guess and offer hypothetical answers to hypothetical scenarios.

Medicare does *not* require an in-person physical, at least for those w/Medicare supplements (not sure about Medicare Advantage plans). If you want to pretend this is the case and get an in-person visit, best of luck.

If it's due to mobility issues, you can contact his primary doctor to see if he qualifies for in-home doctor visits covered by Medicare. If not, then a medical van may be required. Or, contact social services for your county to see if he qualifies for medical transport (you should accompany him).

If it is because he refuses to go... try a therapeutic fib (ie. any story that will motivate him to go without forcing or fighting). If he needs medical attention sooner rather than later call 911. Other than this, there are no other options.

Why cannot/will not your husband go to his doctor?
