I am taking care of my mom through community health care insurance. Will that mess up my Social Security?

If I sign up through an agency will this mess up my SSI?

Yes it will mess up your SSI. You'll go to a higher income bracket.

By SSI do you mean Social Security or Supplimental Income thru Social Services.

With Social Security it depends in your age to how much additional income SS allows. I started collecting at 62 in 2011. Back then I was not allowed to earn more than 14K a year. There is a penalty if you earn over the cap. 66 was the age for full SS benefits. It was something like 66 and 2 months I could earn as much as I wanted.

I think the cap is now 17k till the age of full SS. Call your local SS to find out.

She is on SSI and starts working the SSI may be cancelled. On SSI the kind of work you are allowed to do is very restricted. I work as fiduciary for some residents of a group home. They work for a bottle redemption center under supervision of a Rehabilitation counselor. If they get a job elsewhere they get kicked off SSI. They are all former drug addicts who have lasting mental health deficits and brain damage from drug use. She needs to check with Social Security office to see what the restrictions are.
There also is a total maximum you get get from SSI. SSI works much differently than regular Social Security.
