My mother is destitute. What options does she have if she is already receiving Veterans Benefits?

My mother is destitute but does receive S.S.I., and something from the Veterans administration. Would these qualify as income that would keep her from receiving low income help?

You should contact your local Department of Human and Health Services (DHHS). They will be able to guide you on what mom can receive.

If you are looking to place her in a long term care facility on Medicaid, she will lose all but around 90.00 of her A&A, if that is the veteran's assistance you are referring to. You can not get LTC Medicaid and full A&A.

Because each situation is unique, contacting the source will be a better resource for your question.

Most likely these will be counted as assets but your county Area Office on Aging could assist in giving you the exact minimums required for further financial aid. Also, there is Medicaid in the community as well as Medicaid for a residential facility, so if she qualifies due to low income, then you would have many more options in placing her in a care facility or hiring in-home help. Best of luck!

SSI is only about $824 a month. How much does she get from the VA? She likely can qualify for food stamps and free health care (Medicaid), but it depends on the state she lives in and if the income from the VA brings her over the Medicaid threshold in that state. What state does she live in?
