Does Medicare pay for skilled nursing care?

My dad is going to need long-term skilled nursing care. He will move into a nursing home after he finishes rehab.

Please please use your dads rehab time to get whatever paperwork and documentation together and determine if a spend down will be needed before he will be able to file his LTC Medicaid application the day after his rehab ends. The NH should have a list of paperwork the State is going to want to see or want to have accompany his application.

Post hospitalization rehab is a Medicare benefit. And the facility is getting 2-3 times the reimbursement rate from Medicare (as opposed to LTC Medicaid). So the facility is ver happy right now. If there is anything you can do so that dad continues “progressing” in rehab and his rehab codes allow for weeks of care, do whatever you & other family can to keep him in rehab as long as possible. Like if he needs his own cheerleading squad to stay focused and progressing, do it!

The SW should be able to help you with a Medicaid application but I would keep on top of it. In my State you only have 90 days from date of application to spenddown any money he has over the asset limit, which in my State is 2k. Get all info needed to the Caseworker. Personally, I would sit down with Medicaid caseworker. Mom's did the application right on the computer. Then gave me a list of info needed to complete the application.

With my Mom she had 20k which was used to pay privately for 2 months. I started the application in April, Mom was placed May 1st and paid May and June. In June I confirmed she was spent down and all info needed received. July 1st Medicaid started.

It has been found on this forum that SWs do not always give the correct info. Thats why I suggest going directly thru Medicaid.

If he is in rehab now, ask the social worker there to guide you to the information you need.

No Medicare will not pay for nursing home care when his rehab is completed. He will have to either self-pay thru his own long term insurance. his own funds or if he qualifies get Medicaid for the indigent.
