Mom is in a MC. Was ok, now paranoid, agitated, physical w/staff. STS in a geri psych suggest via ER. Worried about Covid…Advice?

Mom lived independently for 30+ years. Has never gotten up early. She is doesn’t want to get out of bed or leave her room. She was always anti pharmaceuticals, so she is reluctant to take her pills. Once they get her down from her room to the group area (meals and activities) she settles and is fine. Will sit and talk with staff and residents. Doesn’t participate in most activities but will do crafts. Leaving her room and taking meds is the big issue. Worried about hospital stay bc of trauma being there and Covid concern.

Perhaps the answer is another facility where the individual needs are easier to address. The model here seems to be geared towards making the patient conform. That may be the only way they can make their profits and keep the patients safe with the available staff. I’m not trying to say they are wrong just that they might not be a fit for your mom.
She must be well enough to think she has a choice. I know it is hard for all concerned.

I think you are right. She is considered high functioning and most of the other residents are significantly impaired. Her memory recall is very short so she does not recall any problems after she is downstairs with the group. I’m going to look for a smaller MC where if she wants to spend time in her room she can. Thanks for your response

I’m concerned about mom going to an ER at this time. Wondering if there is another way to tweak her meds without going to a geriatric psych hospital. MC saying they are not equipped to monitor her if meds are going to change. Covid surge in my area is significant.
