I have exactly the same dark spot night vision effect as described by member wvanfleet in a Dec 2016 post.
Has anyone else experienced this and found any useful explanation/treatment?
I have had a detailed examination of my retinae by two ophthalmologists who claimed that they could not detect anything in my eyes that could explain the phenomenon.

You should be aware of the difference between optomotrists and opthamologists.
Both can dialate your eyes, but opthamologists are MDs who can do more extensive testing.
I am relieved to hear you had the exam of several opthalmologists, and would suggest, if this is still bothering you that you see a neurologist who will likely order an MRI. Sometimes there is an incident in the brain that can explain such thing. I wish you the best; it is always difficult to have something like this that cannot be medically easily explained; it makes one worry. Best of luck, and do ask your doctors to refer you to neuro. I am somewhat disturbed that neither doctor did this when no explanation was found. Barb's report to you is so interesting, a great link. And amazes me what you can find on the internet. It is odd, however, if you are one of few who do notice this black spot, and I am wondering why your eye docs didn't discuss it with you if you are one of the rare who does see it.
What exactly DID the doc suggest to you?
The effect is bilateral. The size of the (intensely) dark patch(es) is much larger than described in the Scientific American article referenced by Barb.
I might add that I first noticed this phenomenon some two years ago. It has come and gone since then but has been rather persistent for several months recently.
Previously an optometrist has suggested floaters. I am familiar with floaters but this effect involves much larger dark areas with some symmetry between both eyes.
