My mom lives in Nevada and I live in California. She was recently approved for Medicaid there I want to move her to a facility here -help?

My mom was living in Las Vegas when she had a stroke in 2017 it changed both of our lives. She was mobile with assistance but within the past few months she lost her ability to walk so she had been in rehab for the past few months still in Vegas. I gave approval for them to apply for Medicaid she was approved so they transferred her to a Longterm Care Facility. I want to move her to California to a facility so that she is near but I can't take care of her. I can't afford private pay to a nursing home but she needs to be at a place where there is a nurse and a doctor who goes there. I know Medicaid isn't transferable but I'm not sure of she will get approved or she might have a share of costs that she might not be able to meet. I need advice on the best & quickest way to get her here.

Call your County Social Services. Ask to talk to a Medicaid caseworkerin your ur State and run this by him/her. They will be able to tell you how you need to reapply and it will be Medicaid pending or if Mom needs to set up residency in your state before you can reapply.

You can ask a SW at Moms now NH but I would not expect her to know how another States Medicaid works. Yes, there could be a sister facility in ur State but that doesn't mean they will except a Medicaid Pending resident especially if residency is a factor. Go to the source first, Medicaid in your state and ask your questions then you can make a more informed decision.

From reading this, it sounds like you should find a facility near you that will accept mom "Medicaid pending". Transfer her to that facility and apply for California Medicaid.

I would talk to the Social Worker at the facility she is currently in.
They may have a "sister" facility in California that is close to you if not maybe one that the company has a relationship with.
The Social Workers deal with this type of thing pretty often I would imagine.
If you have a few facilities in mind let them know what ones you would consider. There is a possibility that if this can be arranged you might not have a choice.
You would have to pay for the transfer, or if possible do it yourself.

Thank you. My mom has been in the facility for nearly 3 weeks and no one has called me accept an RN the first day she was there.

Biggest thing to keep in mind is that neither state will pay to move her. You will have to pay for that. If she is already on Medicaid, she won’t have the funds to do so.

Thank you for your response. I will handle moving her.

Talk to the place she is in. Maybe they can help. Also talk to the facility mom is moving to.

There may be an adjoining state reciprocity agreement between California and Nevada.

Thank you for your advice. I know this isn't going to be easy.
