My mother has dementia and has no money other than Social Security. She is selling her condo in Florida and has moved to Illinois. The sale will take place in Florida. Are the assets from that home exempt from Medicaid eligibility in Illinois?

assets are to used for her care. Not as gifts or to be saved for inheritances. Why should she get free ride at the nursing home at taxpayer expense. Medicaid is for who are need. Not for those who have assets to pay for her care.

No, her assets are her assets, and money from the sale of the home is one of her assets. It will have to be spent down before she is eligible for medicaid if she sells the home. If the home is a rental, then that income is also not exempt, it is an asset of hers, and would likely prevent her qualifying for medicaid. Her assets are her assets in whatever state she lives in. And gifting the money would also count against her. That is as I understand it, but a call to 1-800-medicare would answer the question for you. Medicare and Medicaid share the same number; if you require directions for medicaid in Illinois they can provide it. Many here are more qualified to answer this than you, so hope Cali, Igloo or Stacy see your posting. Also want to tell you that you are wise to check this out before acting, and that you should never assume info from a forum is spot on, esp. where legalities and such are concerned; always go to the source.
