Grandmais98 Asked April 2021

My grandma (98) with dementia just moved in with me. She refuses to bathe. Any help?

My grandmother has been living with my mother who is 80 who can no longer care for her. so she moved in with me in California two days ago. Mom had a friend who would come over and bathe grandma. I have had seven back surgeries and cannot reach over into a bathtub to secure her. Are there places in Ventura CA that I can take her ?

What were your expectactions of the hands-on care required?

The combo of physically caring for a 98 yr old & 7 back surgeries just does not compute imho.

Even if a spritely do-everything for herself.. at 98 that will change!

Wash bowl at a sink would be my suggestion until an aide is employlyed to assist with anything more.

Exactly, with her back issues she should be doing as little as possible.

Call hospice to help. Not only will you get bathing help but also a nurse to help with medical needs.

Do not even attempt to help her in the bath with your past history of back issues.

In fact, if hospice can offer an end of life hospice facility, take advantage of it.

My mom is in a hospice house now. They are wonderful.

Area agency on aging should be able to get bath aides to come to the house.
