A psychiatrist diagnosed my uncle with dementia but his GP said paranoid psychosis...what are our options for care?

Hello my uncle got diagnosed with dementia by a psychiatrist and his GP said it's paranoid psychosis....can we still place him into a facility for dementia? thank you.

This is how I feel about GPs. They know a little bit about everything but are not specialist. I don't understand how a GP feels he can override a Psychiatrist's diagnoses. I agree, take him to a neurologist.

Get your uncle to a neurologist or geriatric medicine doctor. They are simply have more experience and training to deal with this. Also consult with an elder law attorney as they may have a better idea of things since they can assist people to get into assisted living.

There is a massive difference here. Was that a neuro/psyc exam? If so I would go with that MD who is bound to know much more and will have to records to prove his diagnosis, will have run the appropriate tests. You will have a difficult time finding a facility that will want to deal with him, I am afraid. Sad it is, very sad, but they do tend to cherry pick.

NEPHEW 1,
No need to start a new thread/question when you never returned to answer any queries so caregivers here could help you! RUDE!
I may be over-reacting.

Taking the first steps to moving my uncle with dementia into a home. We do not have access to his finances. What do we do first?

Uncle and his sister are estranged, doubt your mother or family should have any powers over him at all. Call APS for help.

I don't think a GP can make an official psychiatric diagnosis but I could be wrong. When you say a facility for dementia do you mean a memory care facility? I think the right placement depends on how a facility can best care for him, that depends on his needs both physically and mentally.
