Have I been approved for Medicaid?

I applied for Medicaid when I found out I had cancer a few weeks ago. My online NCDHHS account (NC dept of health and human services) says I’m approved for “Insurance Affordability” and “Retroactive Insurance Affordability.” I’m not sure if that means I’m approved for Medicaid?

My husband and I have been unemployed since March and we have a child under 18.

I have been assigned a case worker. I know because she called to verify that my husband was unemployed.

I am very anxious about this as I am scheduled for surgery in a few days and they want a lot of money upfront. If “insurance affordability approved” means that I will receive Medicaid that would be a load off our minds. Does anyone know what “insurance Affordability approved” means in this instance? Is it Medicaid or is it ACA insurance?

thank you!

You could talk to the billing office at the hospital and let them know about your situation. Most facilities are willing to work out a payment plan. My mother did this and was able to negotiate a discount for cash payments. Good luck.

Also make sure the medical staff and facility take Medicaid as a form of payment. Not all do

They do, but you’re right, I should have checked first. I didn’t know if they did or not at first. Thank you so much for your reply. :-)

One of the frustrating parts of being on Medicaid is the very unclear language they use. I help manage my MIL's Medicaid paperwork. Ugh. It makes me feel stupid...it's like a foreign language I can't understand. Online you can find definitions of phrases that they often use. But definitely call or text your caseworker to get full clarity before you do anything in the future. It's part of their job and most of the time they are happy to help as they are your advocates.

I know! I’ve been trying to find definitions of Medicaid lingo online, but the language they use is so vague. I don’t have the caseworker’s contact info - she called me quickly to verify some info and that was all. When I login to the web portal to check the status of my application I see “Insurance Affordability Approved.” But I haven’t yet received an email. The New Year holiday may be a bit of a wrench in the communication. Thank you so much for your reply. :-)

If you have been assigned a case worker, I like your odds that you have been approved for Medicaid. But the letter they sent you is not very clear. Call the caseworker and ask.

Many hospitals have funds available for people who need care and do not have the money for it. Call and ask to speak to a patient advocate.

I'm sorry you have to worry about this as well as your health. Best of luck going forward.

Yes, in their fancy way they are saying you are approved. Go get your surgery done, good luck!
