Where can we house my mum?

My mum is 76 years old, and in poor health. She lives with my 2 sisters since October 2019. Before this, she lived with me for 7 years, however, my husband and myself cannot care for her as we are both jobless. My sisters cannot take care of my mum anymore because their home has a staircase and my mother can hardly walk because her spine has collapsed. She shuffles along very short distances with a walker. She is not incontinent, but I fear her bladder and bowels are not strong at all. If she exerts herself, she does have both bladder and bowel accidents. We desparately need to put her into some sort of caring. However, both my sisters earn small incomes (enought to support themselves) and my husband and myself are unemployed right now. We really need help. Could someone please give us advice and guidance.

First, it is good that your family has recognized that you can no longer provide needed care for mum and at this point are all on the same page.

Second, contact your local seniors agency about a needs assessment. This will help to determine the level of care that Mum needs and which facilities can offer it in your community. There maybe a wait list and it is best to get on a list sooner than later.

Does Mum have any sort of a pension? Here in Canada residents who have lived here for more than 40 years after their 18th birthday are eligible for OAS and GIS if they do not have any other income. That income is enough to cover publicly funded nursing homes. Many people are not aware of public pensions for seniors and do not apply for them.

I think that in the UK, where you are, things work differently than anything here in the USA, which is where I am located, so anything that I can recommend to you wouldn't apply to your National Healthcare System. The best advice I can offer is to go through your Mum's medical system, her doctor, and etc. Wishing you good luck.
