My elderly neighbor is paying $300/hour for homecare aid. What can I do if she refuses to understand that is an unreasonable amount?

Call APS and report that you believe that two vulnerable seniors are being financially exploited by a caregiver.

Do it now!

God bless you for caring enough to help them.

I have been doing a lot of calling the last few days because of an upcoming surgery. I need someone here in the house for my husband while I am in the hospital . The average fees that I am finding is $ 25. per hour. Most have a live-in rate (24 hours ) of $300./ 360 That is a very good deal because If it was on an hourly basis it would be $25. X 24 hours = $600. I found one place that has a set 12 hour rate of $160. And thought that would be better because the night person would not need a bed to get 8 hours sleep and their own bathroom ...They would have been sleeping during the day before the came to me .. I hope this helps ...

Dear "Demimd,"

I wish I was comparing apples to apples but, I read that Nationwide in 2019, the average cost for home health aides is $22 an hour with state averages ranging from $16 - $30 an hour. If it's just a home care aide, the article said it can vary as much as 50% even in the same state or town and is typically $20 an hour with state averages from $16 - $28 an hour. So I couldn't tell if your neighbor has a home health aide or a home care aide. Either way, it's always important to do your due diligence and make sure your elderly neighbor is not being taken advantage of financially and that she is actually receiving the care she's paying for!

No, no no. Something is WAY off here. No home health aid would dare do that. That would mean a prison sentence. So something is wrong here.
What proof do you have of this?

Unfortunately I don’t have any proof - this is what they told me earlier today and I’ve been worried since.

Has your elderly neighbor been diagnosed with dementia? Is there family involved? Have you confirmed that she is indeed paying $300 per hour and not $300 per day or per week? You can report your concerns to APS.

They are 2 sisters in their 70’s with no family except an estranged Brother. They appear depressed and perhaps with other psyche diagnoses- personality disorders maybe -
they were so happy to have this attendant but noted she’d was expensive. I asked several time $300/hour or day and each time they said hour.
