I live in South Africa. My father has dementia. My sister is handling his affairs without POA. We asked for statements but she refuses. Advice?

My sister has been taking care of my dad for a few years since my mom passed away in 2015. My dad gave her Power of Attorney a few months ago when he was still capable. There was an argument between them and my dad went to the bank and cancelled her Power of Attorney. He has now been diagnosed with vascular dementia and she is still continuing to do his financial statements. We have asked her for monthly statements as well as the right for me to have access to his financials as there is a trust issue. She refuses. What can I do?

Was she notified in writing that her proxy was revoked? If not, that should have been done, by certified mail, return receipt requested. And as others suggested, notify banks and any other entities to which conformed copies were given of this change, and provide them with the address to which info should now be sent.

In revoking that POA, did he create a new one, or is there no one acting as proxy now?

Has the POA been revoked thru the attorneys office? You can find out online if there is a revocation. If no, your sister is still POA. The bank will continue honor the POA. My dad and I had to get my brothers revoked because he fraudulently got it done to get my mothers money.

Take Dad to the bank, requesting a copy of the statements be sent to him regularly.

I would first get a statement from the Bank showing Dad revoked the POA. Did he assign someone new? Here in the US, no POA then guardianship is needed. Also here in US, POA does not have to share any info with anyone else. They are representatives of the Principle and really shouldn't give out financial info. At this point guardianship overrides POA. Here in the States its expensive.
