Mother being released from rehab, now I need to fly so I can help her. What would you do?

Hi all - Sorry if the category for this post is inaccurate, wasn't sure where else to put it in this age of COVID-19.

My mother had a mild stroke about a month ago and has been in a NY rehabilitation facility ever since. They're releasing her on Tuesday and since I'm her only family member, I need to fly across the country to help her at home (which is a few towns over from one of the country's 'hot spots'. I'm not so concerned for myself about flying, but I don't want to pick up anything along the way and potentially expose her. They won't extend her stay - I'm not even sure if it's safer for her to stay there vs. going home anyway. She will need continued PT and OT at home in addition to home care for a few hours a day. I was thinking about driving, but that would eat up 5 days and I can really only take a week or 10 days max. Terrible timing, but then again, I'm not sure it will be better any time soon. I would feel terribly guilty about not going at all and just allowing strangers to get her settled back into her apartment (she lives alone). What would you do? Thank you in advance. Stay well everyone.

Tough call. What does the facility recommend in this case? Are they specifically asking for you to pick her up? Is your mom specifically asking for you?

Do you have access to her primary care doctor? Can you find out what he/she thinks about it?

I feel badly for those who need home health or any health care at this time. Especially home health because it will be impossible to do ‘social distancing’ with physical and occupational therapy.

Best wishes to you and your mom.

It's understandable feeling guilty... but you would feel WAY more guilty if she becomes ill from your visit. I personally wouldn't risk it. Maybe in a few weeks (hopefully less) it will be safer. In the meantime, call as many times as you need to daily.
