Mom (96) with dementia is refusing to eat, and take meds. Her blood pressure is very high but refuses to go to the hospital. What can I do?

She is very paranoid, thinks my husband and I are going to jail, says we are dying, people are taking blood from her, on and on. I tried to get her to go to the hospital, got very firm with her. Pulled her covers off told her she needed to go or she is going to be sick. I finally gave up. She is now accusing me of hurting her. She said I broke her hip! I told her well, if your hip is broke we better get to the hospital. Still didn't work. Don't know what to do.

Showie, go ahead and call that ambulance. Even if your mother does refuse to go or to let the paramedics check her over, she's still no worse off and you will have done your best.

EMT's can be quite skilled in getting someone to cooperate. Give itabtry and like Barb said, get it documented that you tried.

Showie, call the ambulance.

This way, it's on record that you tried to get her medical care. The paramedics can assess her and can probably tell if something is seriously wrong.

They can also make a call to Adult Protective Services. APS is in a position to mandate that your mother be taken to a hospital.

You can't argue or reason with someone with dementia.

First, I’m sorry you’re in this situation. Second, I would never tell someone in this situation what they “should” do...if it were me, given only the info stated, I would call and ask for ambulance transport to the hospital and tell them the reasons written.

This what I want to do. She will refuse to go with the paramedics. They will not take her if she refuses to go. This happened a year ago. I had to wait until she finally felt so bad she gave in. She is much worse this time. The dementia is bad.
