Alzheimers and stroke outcome?

My dad has just been rushed to the emergency room unresponsive and leaning to one side. I have to pick my daughter up from school and will go to the hospital. The nurse at his facility suspects possible stroke. What has been your experience with dementia and stroke outcome?

So sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope he is ok and I hope you are ok as well. I’ve read your previous posts and your Dad has had a difficult time. I’m sending you a hug. So awful this disease for LO’s and all of us who care for them.

My dad did not have a stroke but rather a massive UTI and dystonia. He is in the hospital recovering. He does have all of his affairs in order for when his time comes.

Sorry for your dad's situation. Doesn't sound great, sorry.

Stroke has advanced the dementia in two of my loved ones. Two others who didn’t have dementia didn’t seem to be affected cognitively. The severity of the stroke, how soon it’s responded to, follow up therapy and overall health of the patient will all affect the outcome. Your best bet is to keep calm, collect your daughter and speak with his doctors after their assessment.

I see from your profile that your father is "in late stages of Alzheimers". Generally, you should expect poor outcomes because his brain is broken and recovering from stroke requires active participation in rehab therapies.

Did he establish a living will? Did he want everything done to keep him alive? If not, get him a palliative care consult and ask about DNR.
